1. ONE WRITER: Jack Pulman
5 Oct 1975

In the 18th century, Cornish Squire Ross Poldark returns home from America to find his estate in tatters, putting things to rights he meets the fiery Demelza and crosses swords with George Warleggan. He is shocked to discover his house in disarray and his fiancee Elizabeth engaged to his cousin Francis.

Ross determines to put Nampara back on track and get his mine Wheal Leisure running again. Ross also decides to take young Demelza Carne into his house as a servant.

Demelza has taken over the running of Nampara, Elizabeth and Francis now married have had a child. Ross has to defend Jim Carter in court but to no avail as he is sent to prison.

After spending the night with Demelza Ross decides to send her away, she returns to her family home but then Ross discovers she is pregnant and tracks her down.

Demelza gives birth to a daughter whilst Ross later tries to introduce his wife to society. Ross also tries to set up a smelting company for his mine, while Demelza tries to reunite Verity and Captain Blamey. A team of strolling players visits the district and mine worker Mark Daniel falls for actress Keren.

Ross decides to break a seriously ill Jim Carter out of prison; Ross's good friend Doctor Dwight Enys begins an affair with Mark Daniel's wife Keren.

Elizabeth and Francis' son Geoffrey Charles contracts the morbid sore throat, Demelza helps nurse him but then tragedy strikes with their own child.

When Mark Daniel murders his wife over her affair with Dwight Ross decides to help him escape the clutches of the law and ends up putting his own life in danger.

Ross is arrested when a ship wrecked and then looted by the village, the law (with a little help from the Warleggans) try to persuade Ross's servant Jud to turn evidence against his master. It then looks like Francis Poldark may give evidence against Ross.

It is Ross's trial and Francis is desperate enough to contemplate suicide. Dwight meets Caroline Penvenen for the first time.

Ross is found not guilty on all charges and makes it up with Francis, they become partners in Wheal Grace. Demelza falls pregnant again.

Ross is being paid to turn a blind eye to smuggling on his land. Jud is feared dead after an accident but has a surprise in store for everyone.

Demelza, heavily pregnant, begins labour pains while out fishing alone. She gives birth to son Jeremy. Francis, whilst searching for signs of copper at Wheal Grace has an accident and ends up being killed.

A mysterious benefactor has agreed to finance Ross's investigations into Wheal Grace. Ross also resorts to having the smuggler's booty hidden at Nampara which almost leads to a catastrophe when Captain McNeil gets suspicious.

Dwight is fined for warning the smugglers of the soldiers approach. Ross has plans to blast a new tunnel in Wheal Grace and is determined to stop Elizabeth marrying George Warleggan much to the disgust of Demelza.

Ross and Demelza's marriage is on the verge of collapse thanks to his obsession with Elizabeth but Wheal Grace is found to be full of tin. War is then declared with France as events move to a climax with Ross fighting it out with Warleggan.
