Penwith has burned to the ground, seven months later Ross returns from the war and the feud between himself and George Warleggan is rekindled.

Ross goes to France to search for Dwight but ends up getting captured as a spy. At home Demelza's brother Drake Carne has fallen in love with Geoffrey Charles' governess Morwenna.

Demelza has given birth to a daughter, Clowance. Unaware of Morwenna's love for Drake George has arranged a marriage between her and the odious Osborne Whitworth. Ross now back home decides to launch a full blown rescue attempt to bring back Dwight from France.
